Climate Policy Climate change actions plans

Climate change impacts have become increasingly severe in the past years, challenging the fast socio-economic development achievements in Viet Nam. With its long coast line and high exposure to climate change threats, such as sea level rise, typhoons and cyclones, the country is highly vulnerable to flooding.

As a long-term process, adaptation builds resilience based on the understanding of risk and vulnerability of the community. It requires the integration of climate change adaptation strategies into all sectors and programs, and its implementation on different societal and governmental levels, to allow for the achievement of wider development goals, such as reduction of poverty and inequality, and to build a community of sustainability and safety.

How are we active in Climate Change Adaptation?

We are active in building capacity of institutions, and policy related to climate change on the national and provincial level. On the national level, we are jointly working with the Ministry of Construction (MoC) towards improving the national processes related to climate change adaptation and urban flooding. We support the Provincial People Committees of the selected provinces in the improvement and implementation of action plans to respond to climate change. This includes the following activities:

  • Analyze the impacts of climate change
  • Develop measures for adaption to urban flooding
  • Improve forecasting information systems, risk mapping
  • Improve drainage capacity and develop drainage master plans in collaboration with urban planning authorities
  • Include local population in the development of emergency plans
  • Integrate climate change into development planning and all sectors, at all levels, and policy institutions, legal documents and their implementation
  • Increase awareness towards climate change
  • Harmonize sectorial efforts in the field of climate change adaptation and disaster risk management
  • Implement pilot projects to adapt and respond to climate change and make them available to other provinces
